LOCAL
MINORITY

Locals or Minorities?

Are the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong really a minority, or are they more local to the city, like the Chinese locals?

What struggles do these Hong Kongers go through?

INCLUSIVITY IN
HONG KONG

Ethnic minorities make up 3.5% of Hong Kong's 7.5 million population, but they are still underlooked.

Despite being a growing community, the ethnic minorities still face a number of troubles while integrating into the Hong Kong community. Namely, racial discrimination, language barriers and widespread poverty.

Are the ethnic minorities truly marginalized? Is it hard to be an ethnic minority in Hong Kong? Will Hong Kong ever address this?

Let's have a conversation with these minorities in Hong Kong and learn about their day to day lives living in this 'diverse' city.

I WAS CALLED CURRY

"He used to call me å’–å–±{gaa3 lei1 - curry}," the tan, Hindu-Muslim kid recalled, with a slight chuckle playing on his lips as he recalled the so-called funny moment in his life, the moment he was called curry. "I thought it was funny, because I like eating curry, so I just laughed" he continued with a small amused laugh, dismissing the subject.

STOP SEARCH

"I would always be stopped by the Police for some reason," he shrugged. "Maybe it's because I look like a robber... Do I?" He asked with a cocked head and a troubled expression crossing his face.
Having been halted by the Police, who demanded for his ID from time to time, and body checked, he was confused as to why he was the target of these 'random' searches. All the time.
